Modesty Blaise - Good News, Terrible News

I hate having to break this news now, of all times, but the 17th volume of Modesty Blaise reprints - Death in Slow Motion - is now out from Titan Books and I'm thrilled to say I contributed an article and some artwork. The book features three complete stories: The Balloonatic, The Alternative Man, and Death in Slow Motion, which was the first Modesty Blaise story I ever read. For this volume I wrote an article about Modesty Blaise artist Neville Colvin and contributed an inked drawing of Modesty and Willie Garvin. This is a thrill for me because I've been a huge fan of the strip ever since I first read that story over 25 years ago, and in the time since I've managed to read every strip and every novel - all of which were written by the great Peter O'Donnell.

Which brings me to the terrible news - Peter passed away over the weekend at the age of 90. Ellie Graham at Titan Books broke the news today:

“Titan Books is hugely saddened to report the passing of writer Peter O’Donnell, who died over the Bank Holiday weekend at the age of 90. “Peter O’Donnell was respected as one of the greatest writers in the comics medium today and had a devout following amongst comics professionals and fans alike”, says Titan’s Managing Director, Nick Landau. “I am honoured to have known him – and published his greatest creations, Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin – for almost 40 years.” Born in South London in 1920, O’Donnell had a long and illustrious career, the highlight of which was his creation of classic crime character ‘Modesty Blaise’. The smart and sassy comic strip ran daily in the Evening Standard newspaper during the 1960s. O’Donnell retired from writing in 2001, but had continued to oversee Titan’s release of more than a dozen Modesty Blaise collections, contributing introductions and commentaries to his classic stories.“

O'Donnell wrote Modesty's daily strip adventures from 1963 to 2001, and also penned a series of 13 novels and short story collections beginning in 1965. If you've never read Modesty Blaise, I highly recommend it, particularly the first 7 years or so of the strip which were drawn by the incomparable Jim Holdaway. I place these as my all time favorite adventure strip, even edging out Prince Valiant and Terry and the Pirates. In the words of Chuck Dixon - "O'Donnell is in a very, very small club of writers who were masters of writing clear, concise, compelling action." I believe Titan has 4 volumes scheduled to come out this year (in addition to the 16 already published), and for my money you can't go wrong with any of them.

Myrtle Beach Bike Week - 70th Year Celebration

The 70th Myrtle Beach Bike Week is May 7 to 16, 2010 - at least that's the date set aside for the celebration in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina - one of the many beautiful beach towns in the crown of islands that welcome bikers!

Myrtle Beach Bike Week has been held since 1940, and until recent years, has drawn an estimated crowd of 300,000 to enjoy the mild weather, abundant restaurants and pristine beaches.

Inspite of the fact that neighboring towns favor the rally, Myrtle Beach -  the "crown jewel"  at the center - has made every effort to eliminate the rally.

Last year's hot spots included Barefoot Landing, Broken Spoke in Garden City, The Beaver Bar, SBB The Original and SBB Four Corners, H.B. Spokes, Harley-Davidson of Myrtle Beach and Harley-Davidson of North Myrtle Beach.

Biker-friendly businesses that have shut down since the economy took a nosedive and Myrtle Beach made its anti-rally stand include The Dog House, B&M Custom Cycles, Studebakers and Marti's Bar.

The Supreme Court heard two lawsuits against Myrtle Beach at the beginning of February, both of them asking the court to force the city to rescind its local helmet law because, they say, it supersedes state law.

The court's pattern is to issue its rulings on Mondays, which means it still could drop an opinion this week that would be in time to allow people to book rooms before the rally starts.

UPDATE: But no rulling was announced on Monday, May 3rd.

Last year, May room rentals were down to 32 percent occupancy in Myrtle Beach, a figure that is not likely to change in 2010.

State law says only people younger than 21 must wear helmets, but as part of its 14 ordinances targeting the May motorcycle rallies, Myrtle Beach decided everyone riding within city limits must wear one. The city also established "noise" check points and outside "loitering" ordinances that have caused rally goers and their friends to boycot Myrtle Beach, year round.

UPDATE: The SC Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the bikers and against the City of Myrtle Beach in regards to the City Helmet Law. The formal ruling will be released soon. - June 8th, 2010.

DESTROY EVERYTHING

Some peope don't get it. They would look at tattoos like this and go "why would someone put that message on their skin?... forever!" The simple answer is cuz they don't give a f*ck what YOU think! Instead of looking at the finished product and admiring the stunning, decorative and perfect lettering done by Juan, and how aesthetically perfectly it fits on Mark's back, people always have something negative to say.

Just look at the perfection. The cleanest lines around, the smooth transition from dark to light on the shading. and look how perfectly it fits...

Check this! Probably one of the largest TASMANIAN DEVILS ever done!!! Fester knocked it out quickly and executed it in awesome style, as usual. He does some clean work... Most people get these Tasmanian Devils smaller but this guy knew what he wanted and how he wanted it. He had a story to accompany it as well.

Some tattooers would say, "I'll never do a Tasmanian Devil.." We ask "Why not?" they would in turn give you some recycled answer they have heard some place before, from another un original artist... trying to act as if it's below them to tattoo this image. When in reality, who gives a fuck? It's a customer service job and they act like they're doing the client a favor!! Egos and attitudes have no place in this trade.

One day these guys are serving burgers and the next they're tattoo artists... it's an immediate image upgrade from ordinary to rock star status! Silly... don't stand for it! If you go into a shop and get treated like a turd, leave and come here!!
